In the second of our Professional Development Webinar Series, we focused on safety management and disaster preparedness to help give school leaders actionable plans for various emergencies and concerns that can arise.
Our Professional Development Webinar Series began in response to you, education operations leaders, asking for more resources to help you grow professionally. One concern and challenge everyone can relate to is their disaster preparedness plan and procedures. We study success in education facilities, operations and safety management and wanted to bring you the latest and greatest resources and speakers on this topic.
Enter last week’s webinar and Paul Timm. Paul is President of RETA Security, Inc., authored a book on the topic, School Security: How to Build and Strengthen a School Safety Program, and has done hundreds of assessments, emergency planning and training for educational institutions nationwide. Paul kindly shared his expertise on the webinar on April 29.
So, what are schools’ biggest concern when it comes to safety management? We polled 200 attendees and nearly half the group, 49% reported an Active Shooter is their greatest emergency concern. Coming in at a close second, 38% reported weather and environmental emergencies are their greatest concern. You are not alone if these safety challenges are also on your mind!
“Active Shooter as the #1 concern is fairly typical with every school I go to, but actually doesn’t line up with what is the most likely or frequent types of emergency Unfortunately, those incidents are at the forefront of everyone’s minds…Severe weather is far more likely to occur,” said Paul in response to the poll.
What does Paul say are the top 5 concerns you should be thinking about?
- Emergency preparedness, including severe weather and active shooter – this includes having an up-to-date and comprehensive plan
- Enhanced communications, including mass communication, two-way communication with police, etc.
- Secured vestibules, such as visitor management software, so visitors do not have full access to buildings until authorized
- Classroom security locks
- Video surveillance
Paul dives into these concerns and best practices to address each of these within your buildings. Watch the recording now for more of Paul’s feedback.
Stay tuned for the 2nd blog summarizing additional key discussion points in Paul’s presentation. We plan to have a Professional Development webinar with a featured speaker once per quarter. This series is not about SchoolDude software, that's not the secret to success. Strong leaders are the key to success. Check back here or on the events calendar for the featured third quarter webinar.
