Our first Chart of the Week for 2015 focuses on Preventive Maintenance success in public districts at a state level. By serving over half of all students enrolled in Public K-12 schools in the United States, Dude Nation has unique insight to the state of Preventive Maintenance programs nationwide. We've seen a positive shift in awareness of the impact Preventive Maintenance has on facilities conditions and the learning environment in recent years. Unfortunately, the implementation of a robust PM program continues to be a challenge many districts struggle to overcome.
The bright spots of success we see at a state level are where state associations and agencies help promote standardized PM templates, resources, and goals for districts to leverage.
In New Mexico, Arkansas, and West Virginia, where state agencies have partnered with SchoolDude, and in other states like Alaska, Arizona, and Michigan, where PM Templates are made available through SchoolDude, we've seen tremendous success stories. For example, in our case study "An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure", we documented howstrong PM programs reduce catastrophic failures by more than 50%. Catching mechanical and other issues before they fail catastrophically has saved districts serious dollars- the data suggests a 30% reduction in the average cost/work order. We also hear reports of extending major building components 20% beyond their typical life cycle. The operational savings and capital renewal relief make it hard to overstate the positive impact a robust PM program has on a district's overall operations.
As far as overall state success goes, the above chart represents the percent of districts performing Preventive Maintenance at a Master's level (defined here as >30% of all completed work as PM). The data represented is for CY 2014 and each state's district count represents all Public K-12 districts in each state.
We're not surprised to see Arkansas and New Mexico at the top of the list- both have state agencies that provide resources and guidance, in addition to provisioning PMDirect to districts. Alaska and Arizona provides districts a wide variety of resources on it's state site. West Virginia recently partnered with SchoolDude and is making significant progress in sate wide implementation of a PM program. Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and Delaware have strong state associations and progressive leadership leading the way for their respective states.
