Energy costs can be unpredictable, but you can always count on your utilities to consume a big chunk of your M&O budget. Nationwide, schools spend approximately $6 billion every year on energy costs, according to the US Department of Energy. Second only to personnel costs, energy and utilities are the next highest expense in a schools operating budget, coming in at 32%, according to AS&U magazine’s 38th Annual M&O Cost Study.
Despite such a large portion of the budget going toward utilities, it can often be difficult for schools to embrace energy management best practices. Establishing a baseline of your utility consumption is a must in energy management.
A Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) with a strong utility tracking module will allow you to establish this baseline and help you get a handle on energy use, as well as identify areas where significant savings are possible.
