School District’s Innovative Use of “YouTube” Video – Soliciting Bids
We recently learned of one more innovative way facility professionals are using whatever is at their disposal to do more with less. Jim Seagraves, the Maintenance Supervisor at the Newport News City Public Schools in Virginia had a problem. Some drain lines under a slab needed to be repaired by having the lines “sleeved”. So, Jim and his team utilized what he refers to as “high tech redneck” ingenuity to address the situation.
Here’s what they did:
- Used their fiber optic camera device to run up and record the condition of the pipe and the surrounding area.
- Asked their IT folks put it on YouTube.com and then let bidders know they could view the video to see if they were interested in doing the work and providing a quote.
The bidders didn’t have to make on-site visits to do their own videotaping of the drain lines and surrounding conditions, thereby reducing the cost of the job.
Ultimately, a successful bidder from North Carolina bid the job and did the work.
